I am excited to be teaching next Thursday at GCC's INNOVATE conference about leading artists ... I remember the first time I tried.
The moment was in 1978. I was 13 and in junior high band. I was trying out for 8th grade drum major. The competition was fierce; only Molly Burton and I remained. The final test was simple but practical: call the band to attention by saying in your most commanding voice, “BAND! TEN HUT!”
Molly went first. She delivered strongly, but I knew with great confidence I had her beat. She was a girl. I was a man, a 13-year-old man complete with a solitary whisker … but you see I didn’t realize I had this strange new substance floating in my 13 year old body – testosterone- and by some peculiar twist of fate, it found its way to my vocal chords that precise moment. I took a deep breath and delivered in my loudest voice, “BAND, TEN huuuu ...uuuuuuut !” My voice screeched. Dogs howled.
It was as though I had been possessed by the spirit of Peter Brady.
The fully-dressed, dickey-laden Bobcat Marching Band erupted in laughter falling out of rank and into a chaos that resembled a “Who” concert. And so, my taking leadership of the band was not to be. Molly had in fact, been the better man that day.
God has had a great sense of humor with me when it comes to helping me with my pride.

God can truly be a hilarious God! Nice use of a Brady Bunch reference...I'll be at the Leading Artists breakout...looking forward to seeing you again.
looking forward to your session.
This is hilarious! If only Molly could see you now!
Great story! At least there was a happy ending . . . Molly Burton's got nothing on the greatest boss I've ever had!
Ha! That's hilarious. Of course, that's because my memories of my junior high school band days are as dreadfully embarrassing to me.
Looking forward to seeing what God will do over the next few days.
I'll be praying for you this week. I'm sure you will do great. I enjoyed the story. It reminded me of drum major camp. Most of the group were guys and thought I was a sissy girl. Then I called them to attention. Let's just say the rest of the week they were nice to me.
loved what i got to hear of your session. you were very kind to answer people's questions. as weird as this may sound. i would love to hear the other mistakes you made. any way you could send me your notes you didn't get to teach?
Awesome job at Innovate, Butch. The programming took us on a beautiful and inspiring story while offering practical tools. There were surreal moments where I asked myself. Do I really get to work here? It's a privilege to serve with you.
Sounds like it went great. I've read many great things from some experiences on blogs. Way to go!
